Laser Hair Removal

The hair removal laser works by targeting a particular color (wavelength) in the hair follicles with laser light. This wavelength is close to the that of melanin: the material that gives color to the skin. In order to avoid problems with increased or decreased skin pigmentation, a balance is obtained in the treatment between the strength of the laser and the effect on the hair follicles. Typically light skinned patients with dark brown or black hair have the most rapid and long-lasting effect from this treatment. Lighter haired patients or those with darker skin tones will require more treatments and may have less dramatic results, due to the properties of the laser treatment itself.

Typically these treatments are given between October and May. This restriction is due to the significant effect that tanned skin can have on the treatment itself. Laser hair removal may be done on all skin types and colors. It often requires 4-8 treatment sessions and can have variable effects based on skin and hair color. Hair removal may be permanent in some patients, but often a variable and small percentage of hair will grow back. This new hair, however, is normally lighter and thinner than before. This can be re-treated without significantly higher risk at a later time.
