The Week Before Surgery

Do not take aspirin or aspirin-containing products (such as pepto bismol, cold and sinus medications or other over the counter preparations).

If you and Dr. Westreich have discussed discontinuing medications, such as Coumadin, Plavix, Aspirin, and other anti-inflammatory medications (advil, naprosen, etc.) you should do so at the appropriate time. If you have questions regarding medications, please call the office.

You must tell Dr. Westreich all of the herbal medicines you are currently taking in order to ensure your safety at the time of your operation. Medications with an increased risk of bleeding include: Vitamin E, Garlic, St. John's Wort and others.

You should not eat or drink anything for 8 hours before your scheduled operative time. As a basic rule, we suggest nothing after midnight on the day of surgery.

You may take a sip of water to take approved medications on the morning of surgery. Examples include blood pressure medications, other heart medications, asthma medications, and others. These should be cleared by Dr. Westreich well in advance of your surgical date.

If you are diabetic, you should not take your medication, oral or insulin, on the morning of surgery. Since you are not eating, your blood glucose could fall to dangerously low levels while awaiting your operation.

As most of our surgeries are ambulatory in nature, you will need someone to take you home after the completion of your case. Please alert the office if you can not arrange for this, and we will discuss other alternatives for you.

The Most Important Thing To Do Is RELAX.
