Rhinoplasty: The First Week
And Beyond

Continue to sleep on your back with your head elevated.

Try to take plain Tylenol rather than other prescribed pain medications (codeine, percocet, etc.). There can be side effects such as nausea, vomiting, and constipation from the more potent pain medicines.

Keep your activity at a minimum: no nose blowing, no exercise, no heavy lifting. If you work and can avoid strenuous activity, you may return to work 48 hours after the surgery.

Keep the cast and tape on your nose dry.

If bone work was performed, you must avoid wearing your glasses for at least 6 weeks after the surgery. Dr. Westreich will inform you on alternate strategies in the event that you must use them.

Avoid sun exposure for the first 2-3 months. The skin over the nose is in a state of healing and can be more sensitive during that time period. If you participate in outdoor activity, use a minimum of SPF-15.

Routine post-operative swelling is often more than 90% resolved within 1 month of the surgery. However, variations in skin thickness and type can influence the rate of resolution. The bridge of the nose and the tip are usually the last to fully heal. Be patient with this aspect.

You may use cosmetics under the eyes at any time after the surgery (unless a blepharoplasty was performed). Applications to the nose can begin within 72 hours of cast removal.
